So do we! That is why Rona Conti, Sakiko Yanagisawa and I, Dave Gosine have created Shodo Ifuku. As lovers of Japanese Culture, we realised that a lot of products available were not created by people who write/read Japanese, and the ones that do only use Japanese fonts.

Isn’t the reason to wear something in Japanese to be unique and stand out in the crowd? Japanese fonts can get you noticed, but that does not make you unique. Therefore, we use Shodo for all the Japanese you read on our items.

So what is Shodo?

Shodo 書道 is a way of writing. The word “shodo”, or “sho”, comprises two characters; 書 (to write) and 道 (a path). Thus it would suggest that calligraphy is a way of being through writing, a path that one chooses not as an art or endeavour, but a sense of being. If you take a deep bow before it, detach yourself from the modern rush and materialistic madness, it will whisper to you, heart to heart, touching your soul with eternal beauty and epic poetry of simple black lines.

Our designs start off as hand-written brush and ink masterpieces by a Shodo Master. We then digitalise the work and create the unique design. We do all designs in-house either in Japan or Canada. Therefore, you will not find our designs anywhere else.
